The two other main projects that we worked on while we were still setting the foundation for Elementz. When we have time we’ll transcribe & upload the pages that have survived time & update this message.
Mew Mew Power: Cyniclon Chaos
Written sometime in late 2005 or in 2006 and was based solely on the 4Kids version of Tokyo MewMew. The summary on the “back” page reads:
“The Mews are in their very first story. Ever since Dren had his last failure, two other cyniclons named Tarb and Sardon are out to destroy the Mew Mews and their new counterparts, the Celestial Mews who are helping out as well. Thats wierd, the whole town has been drained of their spirits and turned into freaks, not to mention Bridgett put on the Necro Necklace and has turned to the evil ways of the cyniclons. Nine Mews, two cyniclons and one evil Mew and the battle over the earth‘s freedom has just started. Who will be the victor? Just read and find out.”
Thankfully this synopsis sums up what we went on to establish in the fan-fic. If our memory serves us right we wrote somewhere between 10-25 pages on college-ruled paper after we wrote the first draft on wide-ruled paper with very poor word-per-line economy. That draft seems lost to time. Sadly most of the pages of our definitive draft are lost to time through a combination of middle school bullies filling our backpack with glue and destroying most of our binder as well as us leaving most of it at our dad’s home after we moved back in with our grandmother only to return finding it most likely thrown away. The last place we recalled it being is in the storage closet by the first-floor stairs. We have transcribed the pages we managed to save here.
G.E.M.M.S.
We want to say it was written sometime between 2006-2008 but the shows portrayed in G.E.M.M.S go as far back as early as 1999. We finally decided to bring them together alongside Elementz. These four shows were very influential to both the expansion of our youthful fantasy world as well as continuing to resonate with us as we grew older. These shows were:
Guardians – W.I.T.C.H
Elementist – Elementz
Mews – Mew Mew Power / Tokyo Mew Mew
Magic – Magical DoReMi / Ojamajo Doremi
Scouts – Sailor Moon / Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
This fan-fic would also include self-insert of us, our cousin and an early version of Elementz based on the 2nd revision. We also added male counterparts to each of the original series’s female teams and will be noted below as well.
As we describe the shows below, we are going to refer to them by the names we knew then by then but make no mistake, when mentioning its US or JP name we are talking about our opinion on the localization and the original respectively.
Since we saw the movie Sailor Moon Super S: The Black Dream Hole back at a daycare known as New Hope sometime between 1999-2001 we develop an affinity for magical girl shows. We would wake up every Saturday at 6:30am to watch it and when it came on Toonami we tune in in the afternoon around 2:30pm. Sailor Moon was instrumental in the creation of our youthful fantasy world where we were a Celestial Scout. Randomly throughout the week, we would “join up” and help the Sailor Scouts “fight evil” as well as “hang out” with them. The male counterparts seemingly don’t appear in G.E.M.M.S alongside the Sailor Scouts but the Mew Mews like we had originally thought. They were known as the Celestial Mews and despite this, they had the powers associated with both Scouts and Mews and would have transformed with “…Celestial Power/Mewtamorphosis”.
The next show we fell in love with isn’t even in G.E.M.M.S but we love it before it became more of a stereotypical girls’ show geared toward children a few years later. That show is The Winx Club and we don’t know why we overlooked it when creating G.E.M.M.S but it may be related to how we saw W.I.T.C.H after we saw how much The Winx Club change from its 4Kids roots. In hindsight, W.I.T.C.H was possibly what we wished The Winx Club would have remained to be. We want to say we also did the same fantasy world things we did with Sailor Moon though not as long.
The next show we would have added to this fan-fic is Mew Mew Power. The was around the time we learnt how to record on VHS tapes so we did our best to record all the episodes while editing out the commercials. We even got our cousin who we wrote into G.E.M.M.S to like the show. This was around the time we start to try and learn to draw as seen with the Cyniclon Chaos cover but unfortunately most of it was traced using projector film that we placed over the TV screen and traced. This was added to our fantasy world duties alongside the Sailor Scouts as we could now transform into a Celestial Mew and “fight” when not “helping out” at the cafe. As stated in the Sailor Moon section above, the male counterparts were known as the Celestial Mews who transform with “Celestial Power/Mewtamorphosis”.
A year or so later, Magical Doremi would also premier and sometime share the same hourly block with Mew Mew Power which made for easy recording. We did a good job recording most of the series back in the day and the Witchling Sing-a-Longs were just as nostalgic and catchy as the Winx Club and Mew Mew power insert songs, primarily “Now that I can Fly”. We remember one day we were walking from home and convinced ourselves we’d have a Dream Spinner under our pillow and would be able to fly soon. As we were writing this we remember that we actually wrote a page of a Magical DoReMi fan-fic using multi-colored pens when our recently created wizardlings so we are gonna note that we added that to this page after writing this section. After talking to the cousin I got into Mew Mew Power, he actually reminded us between Dec. ’21-Mar. ’22 that we also got him somewhat into Magical DoReMi which surprised us because we kinda forgot we did. Yet again this was added to our fantasy world were we “helped out” at the shop, “took” wizardling advancement test and “helped” the people of Port Mystic. The male counterparts were known as well…the wizardlings who transform with their “Star Spinners”. Interestingly, We had bought some multi-colored stacking pen and wrote a short 2 page story that was introducing Valgaindar/Valganer; the leader of the Wizardlings. That can be read here.
And now for the final show, W.I.T.C.H. As a troubled teen who liked these kinds of shows, a lot of what the girls and other characters went through in the show often resonated well with us at the time. W.I.T.C.H and Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S were noticeably more mature than the other shows in G.E.M.M.S.. Also during this time, we learnt of the original Japanese origins of all these shows via dial-up internet. It was also around this time we had moved to recording exclusively on DVD(+/-)R & RW so all of our W.I.T.C.H archives are DVD only. It’s also the only show on this list that sorta parallels Sailor Moon as we’d have to stay up late on weekdays instead of getting up early on the weekends; between 11pm-1am we think, to record it if we didn’t set a timer. Thank you PANSAT for giving us access to Jetix oh and the person who talked our grandmother into getting it. Like a broken record we joined the other members of W.I.T.C.H and W.I.Z.A.R.D in Heatherfield “defending” the Veil amongst other responsibilities. Yet, again, we had our cousin record an episode for us when PANSAT went down but by this point, he was living his own life and not following his big cousin as much. Finally, The male counterpart’s initials spelled out W.I.Z.A.R.D. and transform with “The Star”.
FINAL NOTE: There is a notable trend of star-based terms for the male counterparts. That can be attributed to Sailor Moon being the first of our influential shows. We think for W.I.Z.A.R.D. we considered using the term “Mind” to contrast the “Heart” but ultimately settled on the “Star”. On this page we wanted to focus more on our most vivid memories with the shows so that’s why we barely talk about the shows themselves. We plan on writing about our feelings and connections with each of these shows on their own dedicated pages sometime in the future. We also plan on transcribing our fanfic in its entirety someday. When that day comes, you can read the story here.
Trivia
Celestial Mew would go on to be one of our first online usernames; first used on a site called socuteanime.com then sokawaiianime.net. We would also go on to use it as our Veoh username.
There was also a social media site back in the day known as zoints and on that site we used G.E.M.M.S as our username. All of the editable flavor text was based on Elementz, possibly v2 transitioning into v3.
